Horses are a unique animal in that, for many people, they are part pet and partially an important source of revenue. Horses are used in racing, entertainment, tourism, petting zoos and even in livestock herding. That means your equine friend is likely very familiar with the inside of their horse float. What you may not realise is that horse float servicing should be part of your regular budgetary planning because of how quickly these floats can deteriorate and how detrimental this can be to your horse. Here are a few reasons why horse float servicing needs to be done more regularly than servicing regular trailers.
Rust
Rust is always going to be a problem in any trailer due to their conditions of use in harsh environments and storage out in the open. However, unlike other trailers, your horse float is carrying a live animal in it that weighs several hundred kilograms. That means any rust in the container can not only mean structural instability that threatens to break on the road but also that your horse could get cut on exposed, rusty metal. This can lead to blood poisoning which is often fatal in horses. Getting rust treated straight away is vital for your continued use of your horse float.
Animal Waste
You can try and time your horse's toilet breaks as frequently as possible, but it is inevitable that they will end up relieving themself in your horse float eventually. This organic waste from your horse can be quite corrosive for the lining of your horse float and present issues in the long run. Of course, one horse-sized puddle of urine is not going to melt through the floor like acid, but over time, this can and will have a negative effect on the interior of your float, and it is important that this is monitored.
Cleaning
An important part of horse float servicing is the thorough job of cleaning that the servicing provider will do. This removes all the dirt, grime, animal waste and any other elements that you may have missed in your regular cleaning. Having a clean horse float is necessary to ensure that your horse doesn't get sick on one of your many journeys. If your horse is continually getting sick and you can't figure out why, then you might want to double-check with your local horse float servicing contractor that your float is in a sanitary condition. Cleaning out all of this filth also means that the float doesn't prematurely age because of scratching and mould/bacteria/fungus growing in between any cracks.
